Background

Librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte took inspiration from classical myth, Italian Renaissance stories and contemporary French novels and plays in his timeless exploration of fidelity and human nature. Mozart's music bubbles with wit and humour, as well as moments of the sublime, including the Act I trio, 'Soave sia il vento'.

Mozart’s beautiful score contains some of the composer’s most attractive arias and is packed with humour. In the 19th century many viewed its plot as immoral or even cruel. However, since the second half of the 20th century its wonderful music and Mozart and librettist Da Ponte’s witty, compassionate examination of young love have ensured its lasting popularity.
